What is “Person of the Week”?
Starting the week of November 18th, we will begin our “Person of the Week” program. “Person of the Week” is part of the Our Human Family/Celebrating Families Unit within the Newton social studies curriculum. During the year each child will have the opportunity to share about his/her personal interests, about his/her family, and about the qualities that make him/her so special. The goal of this program is for the children’s sense of self, sense of self in relation to the classroom community, and understanding of family dynamics to begin to emerge and focus.
What are the components of the program?
1. A Collage: 5 – 10 pictures and other mementos are gathered and assembled at home and brought to school on the Monday of the child’s week. The kindergartner will have a chance to show the collage and talk about it. The collage will be displayed on our “Person of the Week” bulletin board throughout the whole week. Captions accompanying photographs and other explanations are encouraged. The collage will be returned to you.
2. An Interview: Our class will conduct an informal interview with the person of the week. The children will generate and ask the questions.
3. A Guest Reader: The person of the week can invite a special family member or friend into our class to read a favorite story. The time can be arranged with the teacher. Please notify your child’s teacher in advance of your book choice. Let us know if you need help choosing a book. Also, please let your child’s teacher know if you will not be able to come in as a guest reader in advance. This will allow us to ask someone from our school to come to our class to be a guest reader for your child.
4. Sharing: The person of the week can select a special collection or item from home to show the class. The item should reflect a special interest, your family’s heritage or something the child made. It should not be a toy. It should probably also not be breakable or irreplaceable.
