Science:
The song we learned last week, “Have You Ever Seen a Pumpkin?”, peeked our curiosity about pumpkins and generated some interesting questions. Throughout this week we have been reading nonfiction books about pumpkins to help us find the answers to some of these questions. So far we have learned that pumpkins are actually a type of fruit called gourds, there are 5 different types of pumpkins and all their seeds look different, the gooey stuff inside a pumpkin is called “pulp”, and pumpkins come in all different shapes and sizes. We also learned that you can make the color orange by mixing together red and yellow paint. We tested this experiment this week and then students used their mixed paint to create pumpkins of many shapes and sizes. Take a peek at the pictures that show the students working through this 2 day project. Their pumpkins are on display in the classroom if you would like to take a closer look!
Reader’s Workshop:
This week we learned about our new letter, “Bb”. Students were introduced to the picture card of a “bat”. These pictures cards that are introduced are designed to help students remember the “special sound” that each letter makes.
Poetry Corner:
In the words of the students in KB, this week’s poem is “spooooooky”.
Skeleton Parade By Jack Prelutsky
The skeletons are out tonight,
They march about the street.
With bony bodies and bony heads,
And bony hands and feet.
Bony, bony, bony bones
With nothing in between.
Up and down and all around,
They march on Halloween.
We spent time this week being “letter detectives” and we highlighted all of the letter Bb’s we could find! Make sure to ask your child how many we found.
Social Studies:
Throughout the month of October we have been learning about the sensational season of fall. We have talked about the signs of fall including the changes in our environment, things we like to do in the fall, what we wear in the fall, and some of the ways animals behave in the fall. Next week we will be having a fall afternoon where we will be using a variety of tools to observe some signs of fall. If you can, please go for a walk with your kindergartner to collect some signs of fall for us to observe. Together you might look for colorful leaves, big leaves, small leaves, pinecones, acorns, or chestnuts. We will also be collecting items at school as well!
