This week Varun was our “Person of the Week”! We were lucky to have a chance to have his older brother, a fourth grader, join us as a guest reader. Varun also brought in his keyboard and played some songs for us that he has been working on during his piano lessons. It was really fun!
Reader’s Workshop:
This week in reader’s workshop was a particularly exciting week for a number of reasons. We learned 2 new letters that were both vowels: A & I (A-apple-/a/ and I-itch-/i/). We discovered that many times we hear these sounds in the middle of words such as cat, mat, bat, hit, and drip. We also learned 3 new word wall words- it, is, & in! We practiced stretching these words out to hear the sounds and then squishing them back together again. Ask your kindergartener to show you how to stretch out these word wall words!
Poetry Corner:
No Time
No time to bat.
No time to hop.
No time to jump.
No time to bop.
Here comes the rain!
Drip, drip, drip, drop
Drip, drip, drip, drop!
With this poem we found words that have the /a/ sound and the /i/ sound in them. We also realized that one of our word wall words is found quite often throughout this poem- “to”!
Math:
We continue to study those “tricky teens”. This week we learned that all of the “tricky teens” start with the digit “1”. We also talked about how we can quickly put the “tricky teen” numbers in sequential order by looking at the second digit because they go in order from 1 to 9. Students had opportunities throughout the week to practice putting these numbers in order. This week in math we also measured the height of our bulbs with unifix cubes. They are getting quite tall!
Science:
Our bulb unit continues to be a success! Students have enjoyed watching the growth of their bulbs and making observations based on the changes they have noticed. This week both groups had a chance to set up a science experiment and make predictions about what they thought would happen. The orange group was wondering what would happen if we planted a bulb and gave it water, but then put it in a box and covered it without giving it any more water, light, or air. After a week has gone by we will open the box to see how our predictions match up with what actually happens to the bulb.
The green group decided to see what would happen if we planted a bulb upside down. We will continue to water the bulb and give it sunlight and air to see what happens.
Ask your child to tell you about what he/she thought would happen and stayed tuned for the results…
“What’s gunna work?? TEAMWORK!”
The students in KB have been working so hard to use teamwork together when playing. Throughout this entire week a number of students have contributed to building this amazing structure in the block center. They were so proud that they used every block on the shelf! On a separate day a number of other students worked together to put together a giant floor size puzzle of a dinosaur. I couldn’t help but take a pictures to show you their hard work. Every day I am continuously impressed with the way they work and play together. Over the past weeks they have really come together as a KB family and work really hard to include everyone and share ideas!
