What’s coming up in April?

It is hard to believe that spring vacation is almost here. Enjoy the time with your family. When we return from vacation, it will seem like time flies and we will be getting ready for the summer and 1st grade!

CONFERENCES

Thank you for signing up and attending a spring conference. I enjoyed speaking with each family about the progress your child has made in kindergarten.

BALANCED LITERACY

Phonics: This month in Fundations we will learn the following letters and their sounds: Qu qu-queen-/qu/, Yy-yellow-/y/, and Xx-fox-/x/ .

 Independent Reading:

Kindergartners are really enjoying Independent Reading! They are happy to be able to enjoy books on their own and to read a simple, patterned story. Independent Reading is a great time for one-on-one instruction in beginning reading strategies. We are working on noticing and following a pattern, pointing to each word, using picture cues to figure out a word and paying attention to punctuation.

Writing:

In Writers’ Workshop we will continue writing small moments stories and adding details to our stories. We will also be learning how to make our stories easier to read. We will be working on adding spaces between the words and writing neatly.

SOCIAL STUDIES

This month we will learn about the Sensational Season of Spring. The children will draw their spring self-portraits and will make a careful observation of our tree in spring.

SCIENCE

We will complete our sand investigation this month. We are exploring different types of sand and their properties. We are also comparing wet and dry sand and learning where sand comes from. The class is especially enjoying exploring sand in our sandbox and building sand structures!
