Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

We have certainly been enjoying our snow covered playground despite the chilly temperatures!

Balanced Literacy:

Over the last few weeks students have been introduced to letters O (Oo-octopus-/o/), A (Aa-apple-/a/), and G (Gg-game-/g/).  We have started to learn that words are a lot like rubber bands and the more we stretch them out the easier it is for us to hear more and more sounds within words.  We have also started to notice that while we can find vowels at the beginning of words, we often times find them in the middle of words.  Together we have been carefully stretching out words to identify the beginning, middle, and end sound in common CVC words (Consonant-Vowel-Consonant) like cat, mop, nap, and pup.

This week we began a new section of the Lucy Calkins Narrative writing unit.  Students are making the switch from writing teaching books to writing personal narrative stories that tell their reader a true story from their life.  Once we return from winter vacation we will continue writing stories and will focus on writing stories with a clear beginning, middle, and end.  Stay tuned…

Math:

Over the last couple of weeks we have focused all of our math learning on the “tricky teens”.  We have explored the “tricky teens” with a variety of different counting games as well as whole group lessons.

Ask your kindergartner:

-What are the “tricky teens”?

-Why are they “tricky”?

-What’s an important rule to remember when writing a number in the “tricky teens”?

-Are 10, 11, and 12 “tricky teens?”

Below is a catchy video that helps us to remember that the digit ‘1’ always comes first!
