KB News: Week of January 7th

Amelia B. was “Person of the Week” this week!

Literacy:

We are continuing to explore the alphabet through our Fundations program.  This week students were introduced to the letter Dd (Dd-dog-/d/).  Our word wall is also growing.  This week students learned two new “word wall words”- can & go.  Students were challenged to find the word “can” on every page of their Dd Book as one of their literacy centers.  Another literacy center this week included practicing letters and word wall words in trays of shaving cream- it was really fun! In writer’s workshop we began talking about sentences.  We learned that a sentence is when a group of words come together.  We also learned that sentences always  start with a capital letter and that we need to put spaces in between our words to make it easier for our reader to read our stories.  Students have been trying out these new writing strategies when writing their own stories during writer’s workshop.  It’s really exciting to see how much progress students are making with their writing.

Poetry Corner:

The Gingerbread Man

Run, run

Fast as you can!

You can’t catch me,

I’m the Gingerbread Man!

I’ve run from a husband.

I’ve run from a wife.

I’ve run from a butcher with a carving knife.

I’ve run from a cow,

and a muddy old sow

And I’ll run from you too,

I can! I can!

Math:

In math this week we began talking about number stories.  Number stories help students to visualize addition and subtraction facts. This week we began just by telling number stories and showing them by using unifix cubes (ex-There were 2 friends playing in the block center and 1 friend asked to join them.  How many friends are there in the block center now?)  We will spend more time next week telling and thinking about number stories as a group and then students will start creating their own number stories by drawing representational pictures to match their story.  Over time students will be introduced to the mathematical language of “add” and “subtract” as well as their symbols.

Science/Social Studies:

Through read alouds and conversations during morning meeting we have been learning about changes in our environment, how the weather affects what we wear, and activities that we enjoy in this weather.  In the coming weeks we will also start learning about what different animals do during the winter months.
