KB News: Week of February 4-8

Matty was our “Person of the Week” this week.  He was proud to share his family photos with his friends!

Poetry Corner

This week’s poem introduced the students to 2 new word wall words: “like” and “my”.  We spent time re-reading our poem throughout the week and highlighting all of the word wall words we could find.  Ask you child to read the poem with you and have them search for word wall words!

My Monster

She has 2 legs, just like me.

She has 2 arms, just like me.

She has 2 ears, just like me.

But my monster has 3 eyes to see!

Literacy

With the 100th day coming up students have certainly become accustomed to the rules and routines of literacy centers during reader’s workshop.  During centers students are continuously working with new letters and words that we have been working with.  This past week we learned the letter l (l-lamp-/l/).  Students have also been beginning to work with vowel sounds, especially when they are found in the middle of words (cat, tip, tub, bed, mop).

Over the past couple of weeks we have been talking about sentences and what makes a sentence a sentence in writer’s workshop.  One of the things we have learned is that all sentences end with an end mark, usually a period or an exclamation mark.  We learned that we use a period when we write a “telling sentence” (a sentence that just tells our reader something about our story), but we can also use an exclamation mark to let our reader know that we are excited about something.  We have been working hard to use these strategies in our own writing.

Math

Our new math unit “Bunk Beds” is under way.  The goal for this unit is to introduce the idea that numbers can be broken up into 2 smaller parts and that there are many different combinations that can be made for any given number.  This past week we worked on trying to find the all of the combinations for the number 4.  With the help of bunk beds we spent time arranging 4 students on the bunk beds and writing the number sentence to show how the kids were placed on the bunk beds.  For example we discovered that when we have 4 kids we could have 4 on the top and 0 on the bottom (4+0), 3 on the top and 1 on the bottom (3+1), 2 on the top and 2 on the bottom (2+2), etc.  This week we will continue to work with the idea that numbers can be broken up into 2 parts.
