Today marks the 37th day of school. Students are becoming more familiar with the routines and expectations of kindergarten with each passing day. It’s also really exciting to see so many friendships forming. Our name posters are done and hanging in our classroom! Please feel free to come in and check them out!
Reader’s Workshop:
In reader’s workshop a few weeks back students were introduced to the writing grid that helps us learn how to form letters correctly. You may have been hearing your child talk about the sky line, plane line, grass line and worm line.
This week students were introduced to the letter /Nn/ and the sound that it makes. We spent time generating a list of /Nn/ words. We discovered that sometimes we hear the /Nn/ sound at the beginning of words, sometimes we hear it in the middle, and sometimes we can even hear it at the end. We also discovered that we have many friends in KB that have the letter “Nn” at the beginning, middle, or end of their name. Students also spent time searching around our classroom as “detectives” looking for all of the places that the letter “Nn” could be found. In reader’s workshop we have also been learning about words. We are learning that words are made when letters come together. We practiced reading and pointing to the words in our class book Leaves Everywhere.
Poetry Corner:
Each week we learn a new poem. We spend the whole week reading the poem and acting out the poem so we can really learn the words. The following week the poem becomes a literacy center where students “whisper read” the poem and then draw a picture to match. This poem then gets placed in their poetry folder. This week’s poem was Five Little Pumpkins. After we read the poem together a few times we then started acting it out. Each child had the chance to take on the role of one of the five little pumpkins. Check out the pictures below!
Five Little Pumpkins
Five little pumpkins sitting on a gate.
The first one said, “Oh my it’s getting late!”
The second one said, “There are witches in the air.”
The third one said, “But we don’t care!”
The fourth one said, “Let’s run and run and run.”
The fifth one said, “Isn’t Halloween fun?”
The “oooooooo” went the wind and out went the light,
And the five little pumpkins rolled out of sight.
Read Alouds & Shared Reading:
Through daily read alouds and shared reading experiences students are being exposed to many introductory skills that will help them develop their understanding of letters, words, and print. Next week we will begin talking about what a title is, where we begin reading, and what direction we read in (from left to right). Some books we read this week are:
- Big Pumpkin
- The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything
- Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse
